About ‘Laughing Matters’: What makes us laugh? For Laughing Matters we invite artists to submit works with a sense of humor! This show is open to all media including drawing, painting, mixed media, multi-media, sculpture, assemblage, animation, and photography. We also welcome literary works such as original poetry, cartoons, and short stories. All works must be original.

Note: During the run of “Laughing Matters”, the 6th Street Playhouse will present “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown”. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the classic Broadway musical based on the famous ‘Peanuts” comic strip by native son, Charles M. Schulz, this play is produced in conjunction with the Charles Schulz Museum. (Entries for ‘Laughing Matters’ are not required to follow a ‘Peanuts’ theme!)

The Wine Country Arts Council (WCAC) will retain a 30% commission on all sales. This is a juried exhibition.

 

Eligibility

  • Open to all Sonoma County artists and WCAC members.
  • WCAC member entries will be juried in the same manner as all other submitted work
  • Wall hung work must be securely wired with picture wire and be ready to hang. Sawtooth hangers, clip frames etc. will not be accepted.
  • Sculptural or assemblage work must not exceed 72” in height and weigh no more than 60 pounds.
  • All works must be original. Signed and numbered photographic prints will be considered.
  • Work must not have been shown previously in the Studio Gallery.

 

Entry Procedure:

  • All entries must be submitted online no later than Sunday, August 6, 2017.

    • Maximum of three entries per artist
    • Wall hung work may not weigh over 50 pounds and may not exceed 60” in any direction.
  • Complete the information requested on the entry form, including an optional description of the artwork/artworks not to exceed 100 words. State any special requirements such as electrical, equipment or other installation needs within this description.
  • Images: All images must be submitted as jpgs. at 300 dpi, no more than 8” on the long side, and no more than three megabytes in size. You may also submit one detail view of each entry. Please name your files as follows: Last name_Title.jpg. If you are including a detail or second view, add the word ‘detail’ to the file name. (Example of file name: daley_dream_of_tomorrow.jpg or daley_dream_of_tomorrow _detail.jpg) Hint: name your files before attaching them to your entry.

Non-refundable Entry Fees:

  • WCAC members – $20 for a single entry or $35 if more than one entry (up to three entries).
  • Non-WCAC members – $25 for a single entry or $45 if more than one entry (up to three entries).
  • All entries must be submitted online no later Sunday, August 6, 2017.

  • Results: Jury results available on August 9, 2017 after 3:00pm on the Wine Country Arts Council website.
  • Delivery: Deliver selected works to the Studio Gallery on Monday, August 14, 2017 between 12:00 and 2:00pm.
  • Opening Reception: Friday, August 18th, 6pm to 9pm.
  • Closing Day: Sunday, September 24, 2017.
  • Pickup of unsold work: Monday, September 25th between 12:00 and 2:00pm at The Studio Gallery.

 

Delivery of Selected Works

  • Deliver works in person to the lobby of the Studio Gallery, 52 West 6th Street, Santa Rosa, CA 95401 (Two doors down from the 6th Street Playhouse) on Monday, August 14, 2017 between 12:00 and 2:00pm.
  • When artists deliver the selected work, bring the signed Waiver, Release and Indemnity Agreement and the signed Loan Agreement Form. Links to these forms are on the online entry form.
  • When dropping off your artwork, tape a label to the back that includes your name, title of the work, and the price.
  • While all reasonable care and precaution will be taken to ensure the safety of the artwork, insurance to cover loss or damage will not be provided. We encourage you to arrange your own loss or damage coverage.

 

About the Jurors:

Kristen Throop is one of the Bay Area’s most inventive fine artists. She is also an accomplished graphic designer, poet, illustrator, and storyteller. Known for exploring psychological meaning and delving into her dreams, Throop works in series that typically take a full year to complete. Examples include: The Lion for Real, Rumination, Bears, and Light Sculptures. Throop graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University in 1985. She currently lives and works in Santa Rosa and has a studio in Santa Rosa’s South A Street Arts District.

 

Christie Marks is a mixed media artist who creates layered works combining drawing, painting, and collage. When asked about her work, Marks says “I’m a mixed media artist using textures and layers to reveal what’s extraordinary in the ordinary.” Marks considers art to be her third career. Prior to embarking on her fine art training she worked in fashion merchandising for 17 years and in interior design for eight years. A late bloomer, Marks graduated at the top of her class with a Bachelor of Arts, Interior Design from California State University, Fresno in 2001. She currently lives and works in Santa Rosa and has a studio in Santa Rosa’s South A Street Arts District.
